US student visa – the difference between F1/2 Visa & M1/2 Visa

The immigration law allows foreign nationals to study in the United States. Foreign nationals must attend a school in the United States. USCIS must approve the school for such attendance. Also, must be approved by USCIS to enroll foreign nationals. If a student from abroad wishes to enter United States for the purpose of education, they must first obtain a student visa which will be placed in the passport of the individual. The student visas are classified into two types.

F student visa (Academic Course)
M student visa (Non-academic or vocational course)

The F visa is classified into F1 and F2 visas. F1 visas are for non-immigrant students for Academic and Language training Courses. The F2 visas are for the dependents of F1 visa holders. In this case, spouse and unmarried, minor children are considered dependents of the F1 visa holder.

The M visa is classified into M1 and M2 visas. In this case, M1 visa is for a person who wishes to do non-academic or vocational course. The M2 visas are for the dependents. For example, spouse and unmarried, minor children of the M1 visa holder.

The F2 and M2 dependents must meet all the eligibility requirements. Also, they provide evidence that they will be able to support themselves financially and will leave United States once the student’s course concludes.

Student Visas for International Students Studying in the U.S.

In order to apply for a student visa, students need an I-20 A-B Certificate. Firstly, you have to enroll in a full time class in order to be eligible to get an I-20 . This includes all workshops and programs. In this case, you must apply and be accepted to a program before the I-20 certificate is issued . In adition to this, you must provide evidence that you have sufficient financial backing to receive a student visa.

About the sevis i 901 fee

The United States government required a SEVIS i-901 fee to be paid for all i-20s. This fee can only be paid after your i-20 application is and a sevis id number is created for you.

Visa application process

Once you have your i-20 certificate (or at least the sevis id #), you can begin the process to apply for a student visa.

Canadian Citizens

Canadians do not need to apply for a visa to study. However,  canadians need to enter the us with student status. To enter the us in f-1 status you need:

  • the i-20 certificate
  • proof of canadian citizenship and
  • financial documents that prove you have the funds available to pay for your tuition and living expenses.

In order to obtain an f-1 or m-1 visa, you must complete the ds-160 visa application. Then, you make an appointment at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country for an interview. Subsequently, at this interview, they will decide whether to issue you a visa.

At the interview

As a rule, evidence of your ability to pay for your tuition and living expenses in the US must be provided. Also, you need to show evidence of ties to your country to prove that you don’t plan to immigrate, such as:

  • family ties
  • residence
  • job or school.

Also, you may be asked about why you chose to study and how you will use the training when you return home.

The length of time it takes to get a visa appointment varies in different countries. See this website for information on the time it takes to get a visa interview and be issued a visa in each US Consulate.
