Understanding F1 Studnet Visa and OPT
International students who wish to study in the United States can apply for an F1 student visa. This visa allows students to pursue full-time studies at accredited schools such as the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory.
In addition, F1 students are eligible for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). This program authorizes students to work in the U.S. after completing at least a one-year academic or conservatory program. Therefore, OPT is available only to students who complete conservatory or degree programs.
Moreover, if you wish to extend your stay in the U.S., you can continue your studies in a longer program or apply for OPT after graduation to gain hands-on acting or filmmaking experience.
Applying for the I-20 Certificate
Before receiving your I-20 Certificate, you must first apply and be accepted into a program at the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory.
Once all required documents are submitted, your I-20 will be processed and sent via express courier within 3–5 business days. Afterward, you will receive a confirmation email containing your SEVIS ID number and detailed instructions on how to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
💡 Tip: You must also show proof of sufficient financial resources to qualify for an F1 visa.
About the SEVIS I-901 Fee
The SEVIS I-901 fee is a mandatory U.S. government fee for all I-20 forms. Importantly, you can only pay this fee after your I-20 application has been processed and your SEVIS ID number has been created.
For more information, visit the official SEVIS I-901 website.
F1 Visa Application Process
Once you have your I-20 Certificate or SEVIS ID number, you can begin the F1 visa application process.
- First, complete the DS-160 Visa Application Form.
- Next, schedule an interview at your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- Finally, bring all required documents, including:
- I-20 Certificate
- Proof of financial support
- Evidence of ties to your home country (e.g., family, property, or current school/job)
During your visa interview, you’ll be asked about your educational goals, why you chose to study in the U.S., and how you plan to use your training after returning home.
🇨🇦 Canadian citizens: Canadians do not need to apply for a visa, but they must enter the U.S. with F1 student status. Therefore, bring your I-20 Certificate, proof of citizenship, and financial documentation.
Since visa interview times vary by country, it is best to check the U.S. Department of State website for the most accurate processing information.
